Joren C. Madsen, MD, PhD, a heart transplant surgeon at Mass General Hospital (MGH), is the Paul S. Russell/Warner-Lambert Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the Malcolm J. Dorman, MD Chair in Cardiac Transplantation at MGH.  He directs the MGH Transplant Center and the MGH Center for Transplantation Science. Dr. Madsen’s research is focused on immune tolerance and xenotransplantation. Through these studies, he hopes to one day provide a heart transplant (human or pig) to every patient in need and to eliminate the deleterious effects of lifelong immunosuppression. He has served on the board of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and the American Transplantation Society (AST), and on the editorial boards of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Transplantation, the American Journal of Transplantation. He was the first surgeon elected president of the American Society of Transplantation.
