2027 Event SiteRobert Lustig MD moderated a conversation with Bahia Jaffer, Joan LaRovere MD and Carter Williams about a question healthcare has struggled with for decades: how to intervene before metabolic disease becomes established rather than waiting to treat its consequences.
Lustig argued that GLP-1 therapies have transformed obesity and metabolic care but do not eliminate the need to address the upstream food and environmental conditions that contribute to disease. Jaffer brought that idea into the consumer market, describing efforts to reformulate products around the Metabolic Matrix framework, including a reduced-sugar ice cream tested with patients with diabetes.
Williams focused on the economics of prevention and the importance of making the healthier option financially sustainable for companies, payers and investors. LaRovere emphasized that the solution cannot sit with healthcare alone. Pediatrics, food companies, agriculture, payers and health systems all influence the environments in which metabolic risk develops. The discussion made prevention feel less like a slogan and more like a design challenge spanning science, business, and everyday life.
