How International Healthcare Leaders are Transforming Health Systems at Speed and Scale

Summary

Martin Mellish moderated a discussion with Adel AlMarshad MD, Haipeng Xiao MD, PhD and Bjorn Zoega PhD on how health systems in different parts of the world are trying to scale innovation while improving access, workforce resilience and patient outcomes.

Zoega described leadership as removing barriers for clinicians closest to the patient. He used robotic surgery to illustrate the point, including teams that pursued a fully robotic heart transplant and robotic brain tumor procedure. Xiao described a different-scale challenge in China, where AI, robotics, clinical partnerships, and workforce training are being used to extend specialist capabilities into rural communities and reduce unnecessary referrals to major centers.

AlMarshad brought the conversation back to international collaboration, arguing that physicians who train across health systems can become important bridges for transferring clinical standards, expertise and new models of care between countries. Across very different systems, the common theme was that transformation depends less on importing a single technology than on building organizations that can adopt innovation quickly and sustainably.
