2027 Event SiteSenator Shelley Moore Capito joined David Brown MD for a conversation about biomedical research, healthcare access and the long-term strength of the US scientific enterprise, following an introduction by Michael Benson DPhil.
Capito described research funding as an area where bipartisan cooperation is still possible, but emphasized that institutions need more than dollars. They need predictability. Uncertainty makes it harder to plan laboratories, support postdoctoral researchers and give young scientists confidence that they can build careers in the United States.
Alzheimer's disease made the discussion personal. With both of her parents having lived with the disease, Capito discussed efforts to expand access to blood-based biomarker testing as earlier diagnosis and treatment become possible. The conversation also touched on pediatric cancer research, rural healthcare, telehealth and the financial pressures facing academic research institutions.
