2027 Event SiteDavid Ting MD moderated a discussion with Adam Kaye, Sandra McAllister PhD, Diarmuid Moran and Rahul Aras PhD on how precision oncology is moving beyond the first generation of matching a genetic alteration with a targeted drug.
Aras used the Wnt beta-catenin pathway to show how deeper biological understanding is turning previously undruggable targets into therapeutic opportunities. The pathway has been understood for decades, but earlier approaches could not separate cancer-driving biology from functions normal cells need. Kaye brought the economics into the discussion, noting that increasingly narrow cancer subtypes can support highly targeted development but also raise difficult questions about pricing and payer sustainability.
Moran's precision medicine and diagnostics perspective underscored how much more complicated patient selection becomes as oncology moves into antibody-drug conjugates, immune therapies and other modalities that may depend on multiple biomarkers. McAllister added age to the equation, describing how the tumor microenvironment and systemic biology can change across the lifespan even when two patients appear to have the same cancer.
Precision oncology is becoming less about finding one molecular answer and more about understanding the full biological context of each patient's disease.
