Steven Zelenkofske, DO

Dr. Zelenkofske has led clinical programs for more than 15 development-stage and commercialized cardiovascular products during his pharmaceutical career and has extensive experience as a principal investigator on a number of important trials in cardiovascular medicine. He currently leads the US Medical Affairs CVMD therapeutic area at Astra Zeneca, managing a team of over 100 people covering the areas of CV and metabolic medicines.

Dr. Zelenkofske served as Sr Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Regado Biosciences for 6 years. In that role, Dr Zelenkofske led all clinical development activities from Phase 1 through Phase 3, filed several patents for NCE, formed and led the scientific advisory board, represented the company on the science committee on the board of directors and was responsible for the clinical development plans and all regulatory interactions of the company worldwide. Dr Zelenkofske assisted the CEO in growing the company, including raising private funding and taking the company public in a successful IPO. Prior to joining Regado Biosciences, Dr. Zelenkofske served as Vice President, Cardiovascular/Thrombosis Medical Unit – US at Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals and, prior to this, as Vice President of Clinical Sciences and Chief Patient Safety Officer for Boston Scientific Corporation’s Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) Group. At both companies, Dr. Zelenkofske led the development and implementation of cardiovascular pre- and post-market clinical strategy. Prior to this, he was a senior director with Novartis Pharmaceuticals, where he held positions of increasing responsibility within its cardiovascular- metabolic division, attaining the position of Senior Medical Director, US Clinical Development, Hypertension and CV Section Head. Dr. Zelenkofske also served as Director of CV Research and Clinical Director of Electrophysiology Laboratory at the Heart Care Group, where he was a physician investigator for a number of pivotal cardiovascular clinical trials, including SCD HeFT, COMPANION, MADIT, AVID and MUSTT.

Dr. Zelenkofske is the author or co-author of numerous articles published in professional journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, American Heart Journal and the European Heart Journal. He is a practicing electrophysiologist at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and serves as an associate professor of medicine at the College of Medicine of the Pennsylvania State University/Hershey Medical Center and for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Zelenkofske earned Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in biochemistry and immunopharmacology at Emory University. He received a medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and holds board certifications in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, cardiology and internal medicine.
