James (Jim) L. Heffernan, FHFMA, MBA, is Sr. VP of Finance and Treasurer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO). In this role, Jim is responsible for all finance functions of the MGPO, including revenue cycle, physician payment & analysis, budgeting & financial forecasting, business intelligence, compliance and business transformation. He plays a significant role in the strategic planning of the MGPO and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) including recent population health management initiatives. He is the executive sponsor of several Partners HealthCare wide finance, information system and benefit initiatives. He has written and testified on ways to simplify administrative processes and to reduce administrative burden on physicians. To help reduce burden, he has championed the development and use of natural language processing and machine learning for better coding and, extracting unstructured data from medical records and administrative files. These tools have also led to better comprehensive financial and administrative reporting. The MGPO has 2,800 participating physicians, more than 4,000 employees and over $1.1B of operating revenue. Jim has over 36 years of C-suite experience in hospitals, managed care and physician organizations. He is a board member of the national Healthcare Financial Management Association, the largest member organization for financial managers of providers, physicians and health plans. MGH, the corporate member and general hospital of the MGPO, is one of the principal teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School.
